Tribute

Under the heading “Objectives of the College,” the College Handbook of 1968 stated:

“ABOVE ALL, THE COLLEGE TRIES TO EMPHASIZE THE FORCE OF IDEALS, THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PRIVATE AND PUBLIC RESPONSIBILITY, THE SAVING QUALITIES OF ART AND LAUGHTER, AND THE SENSE THAT KNOWLEDGE, WISDOM, AND UNDERSTANDING COME FROM AN AWARENESS OF OTHERS AND NOT JUST ONE’S SELF.”

That was our first College Handbook, and the Class of 1972 reaffirms this objective and hopes in some small way this Team Room will encourage and inspire the spirit of solidarity it praises. We seek not only to spread the word, but also to spread the good works that flow from this objective.

We observe that many of the ideals the college has long stood for have been under attack at times, and undoubtedly will be again. And they may be difficult to pursue. But if we learned anything during our time at Grinnell, truly worthy ideals are worth working for long after we collect our diplomas and take our leave from campus.
