Tribute

Grinnell College changed Austin’s life by opening up a whole world of academic pursuits and instilling in him a life-long love of learning.

Austin's father, Edwin Kessler III, was a highly regarded meteorologist who did pioneering research in doppler radar and severe storms forecasting. After his retirement he pursued a second career in political and social activism.

A significant part of Austin’s career was devoted to health policy research, made possible in large part by the critical thinking and writing skills he learned at Grinnell.

Funding a research lab in the new Humanities and Social Studies Center is a perfect way both to honor Austin's father’s legacy and to give back to the college which has been such an important part of Austin's life since the day he first set foot on its campus.
