Why I Wanted to Serve on the Alumni Council:

Grinnell College has played and continues to play a significant role in shaping the person I am, and it opened up the world to me in so many ways. I joined Council to give back to the institution that has given so much to me. I also was interested in serving as a representative for my alumni family, and I believed that I could offer perspectives on Council that might otherwise be underrepresented or absent in the group.

A Quote I Like:

"When we speak, we are afraid our words will not be heard or welcomed. But when we are silent, we are still afraid. So it is better to speak."

―Audre Lorde

A Little Bit About Me:

I am Chancellor's Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley. I am a native Houstonian who, before 1990, never imagined herself traveling to Iowa for a short trip, much less for four years of college. I first learned about Grinnell College when I attended a campus presentation by Jodi Hester, a Grinnell alumna and then-admissions officer, during my senior year in high school. Jodi convinced me that Grinnell was the right college for me. She was absolutely right. At Grinnell, I met my husband, who is currently a member of the physics faculty at the College. I also was exposed to new ideas and an amazing group of people.
