Dick grew up in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School. Upon graduation from college, he attended Vanderbilt University on an AEC Radiological Physics Fellowship. He earned a master's degree in physics and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Vanderbilt. He taught undergraduate physics at Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis) for four years. He worked at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory for 30 years, first as a chemist and later as a computer programmer. Since retirement, he volunteers weekly at the American Museum of Science and Energy and frequently with the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum which runs excursion trains. He is a board member of three different non-profit groups. He has been married for 58 years, and has two daughters and two grandchildren.
